We tried to make Old Camdenians go to us; they said no, no, no (eventually)...
After a long and frustrating day, I regret to advise that this Sunday's match is cancelled.
Following Langleybury 2nd XI's cancellation of our league fixture, I arranged a replacement friendly match with Eastside CC yesterday afternoon. However, I received a call from Eastside at 9.40 this morning, cancelling "because it's Ramadan". Evidently such an eventuality is entirely unpredictable.
A quick check of the Conference and www.thefixturelist.org.uk revealed only one viable opponent - Old Camdenians. I immediately rang and spoke to their Fixtures Secretary. He was amenable to playing us, but wished to "check that his Captain hadn't arranged another match in the meantime". He promised to call me back.
I rang at several points thereafter to chase, but kept getting his voicemail - which he didn't reply to.
I finally reached him at 4.00 today, and he advised that they made alternative arrangements around an hour earlier. I thanked him warmly for his consideration in keeping us informed of developments.
Unsurprisingly, the Conference have no possible opponents for us at this late stage. Therefore we will have to cancel. Apologies - but hopefully the above gives you a flavour of the sort of thing we sometimes have to go through in trying to get games organised.
